Inflatable Exhibition at the Exploratorium Museum
Seeking to bring in a larger audience and expand their reach to art-savvy adults, San Francisco’s #1 museum engaged Colossal to curate their summer 2018 exhibition. Starting with three fully-fledged exhibition concept proposals, Colossal worked closely with the museum’s leadership to select and shape the vision for an exhibition that would celebrate the connection between art and science, resonate with all ages, and appeal to an art-focused audience.
The resulting show, “Inflatable: Expanding Works of Art” ran from May 26 to September 2, 2018, and increased museum attendance by 9%. Inflatable included five works by artists from around the world: Amanda Parer, Shi-Chieh Huang, Jason Hackenwerth, Jimmy Kuehnle, and Pneuhaus. Huang, Hackenwerth, and Kuehnle created original, site-specific works and Parer and Pneuhaus integrated existing artworks into the Exploratorium’s unusual, highly interactive indoor/outdoor space, which spans 330,000 square feet.
